Simplifying a Multi-Step Travel Planning Experience

challenges
Fragmented journey: Travel planning typically requires switching between multiple platforms (flights, accommodation, activities)
Complex decision-making: Users need to compare options across multiple variables (price, time, location, preferences)
Search friction: Filtering and refining results can become overwhelming, particularly on mobile
Booking clarity: Multi-step booking flows can feel unclear, leading to drop-off or errors
solutions
Unified platform concept: Brought flights, accommodation, and experiences into a single, consistent interface
Search & filtering: Designed flexible filters to help users refine results without overwhelming the experience
Structured booking flow: Introduced step-by-step progression with clear indicators
Homepage: Focused on inspiration through curated destinations and visual storytelling
The Challenge:
The core challenge was how to:
simplify a complex, multi-step journey
support decision-making across multiple variables
maintain clarity throughout the booking process
The focus became structuring the experience in a way that reduces friction while still allowing flexibility.
My Role
This was a concept project focused on UI and experience design:
defined key journeys across search, discovery, and booking
explored layout and interaction patterns for complex flows
designed high-fidelity interfaces with a focus on clarity and consistency
Key Decisions & Approach:
1. Structuring a Unified Experience
Travel planning is often fragmented across platforms.
The concept brought:
flights, accommodation, and activities into a single flow
consistent UI patterns across different booking types
a more cohesive experience from search through to checkout
This reduced the need for users to mentally switch between different systems.
2. Simplifying Search and Filtering
Search is one of the most complex parts of travel planning.
The approach focused on:
flexible filtering without overwhelming the interface
progressive refinement of results
clear visual hierarchy to prioritise key information
This aimed to support decision-making without increasing cognitive load.
3. Improving Booking Flow Clarity
Multi-step booking processes can easily become confusing.
The flow was structured to:
break steps into clear, manageable stages
provide consistent progress indicators
maintain context throughout the journey
This helped users understand where they were and what remained.
4. Balancing Inspiration with Functionality
Travel platforms need to both inspire and enable action.
The homepage was designed to:
surface destination ideas through strong imagery
support exploration without overwhelming users
connect inspiration directly to booking flows
Validation & Iteration
Interactive prototypes were shared on platforms like Behance and Reddit to gather feedback.
This helped refine:
visual hierarchy
layout clarity
overall usability
Accessibility considerations were included throughout, particularly around contrast and typography.

01
I split up the design stages according to a 4 week timeplan to be launch-ready.
02
Key themes of feedback were analysed, leading to the development of well-defined user personas that informed the design process.
03
I created the sitemap after identifying the key functionalities, ensuring a logical flow that aligned with the needs of the target audience (and of course the app’s core objectives).
04
The first low-fi screens served as the foundation for feedback and allowed for early validation of design concepts
05
I developed the high-fidelity branding after conducting further online research, drafting mood boards, and analysing competitor brands.
06
A selection of high-fidelity screens exploring search, discovery, and booking flows within a unified travel experience.

wrap up:
As a concept project, the outcome focused on exploring how to structure a complex travel experience:
clearer flow across search, selection, and booking
improved hierarchy in high-density interfaces
a more cohesive and consistent UI system
The project also strengthened skills in visual design and handling multi-step user journeys.
What I’d Push Further:
validate flows through structured usability testing with real users
explore personalisation based on travel preferences
refine filtering and comparison tools for more complex scenarios
introduce micro-interactions to improve feedback during booking
